Of all Volkswagen Touareg modifications produced from 2002 to 2021 real fuel consumption according to user ratings is approximately 23% higher compared to advertised consumption. For petrol engines real consumption is in average 21% higher, but for diesel engines is approximately 24% higher. Starting from 2002 Volkswagen Touareg average difference between actual owner-reported fuel consumption and stated consumption was slightly above industry average, at 2008 it was significantly higher than average, at 2009 difference became slightly above industry average and finally at 2020 difference between owner-reported and advertised fuel economy became significantly higher than average.
